They occurred somewhere from once a week to once every six weeks. Of the five agreements, two were negotiated outside of schooling, one during schooling and two through a combination of school and extracurricular hours. The total duration of negotiations for each of the five agreements ranged from eight to eighteen months. Participants gave a number of reasons for the difference in remuneration between the different agreements. Some thought that the different requirements imposed on staff by different schools required additional remuneration for extra work. Another reason was solvency. The different agreements reflect a range of public resources collected by the five schools and a wide variation in the fees they collect. A third reason was competition for the best teachers. If a school paid the best salary, some interviewees said, then, automatically, they would get the best teachers…
