Love-led leaders don’t let the need to be right override their responsibility to do right.”    N. Anderson

Leadership is hard. Especially when there are big decisions that must be made. The idea of going a certain direction because it will make you look good never ends well. Perhaps in the short-term, but not long-term.

Short-term vs. Long-term Decisions

Throughout my life, especially in leadership roles, I have found myself face-to-face with being right or doing right. There was always the momentary mental back and forth. Earlier in my career, I likely made decisions for me, versus the greater good. The ego was front and center as I tried to establish myself. Fortunately, as we become more seasoned, the voice of reason becomes far more convincing than the ego.

Silence the Ego

The powerful urge to be right is undeniable, but history teaches us that doing what’s right leads to better outcomes. Maybe not the outcome we planned but better than just the need to be right.

Some leaders perceive admitting their wrong as a sign of weakness, fueled by the ever-powerful ego screaming, “You can’t lose!” However, if we’re so insistent on being right at any cost it shows a lack of consideration for our team and those we’re supposed to be working for, not against. Again, a short-term decision that compromises the long-term health and success of the organization.

Do you want to be the leader who must be right or who does the right thing?

Here’s to leading with love!

Love,

Nicki
